hello guys , i have been hearing quite the debate weather dogs are carnivores or omnivores , well today i will be telling you why dogs are omnivores and not carnivores , while it is totally believable to think dogs are carnivores , to me this simply is false and i will go to why i think that in this post.
for one we most note that almost all of the dogs close relatives in the wild are omnivores , but i will name a few
fox [omnivore]
coyote [omnivore]
bear [omnivore]
maned wolf [omnivore]
grey wolf [carnivore]
wild dogs [carnivore]
now as you can see the dogs close relatives are on the most part omnivores and not carnivores , now typically if we take a look of animals that share this much in comman they have simalir diets , for instance chimpanzees and bonbos both are omnivores , horse and zebra both are herbivores , dogs share a pretty good chunk of their dna with coyotes as well as wolves , but coyotes are omnivores not carnivores.
second all for digestive system
dog intestines
carnivore intestines [house cat]
omnivore intestines [human]
now to put in short cats have a intestinal length that is around 4-25 times their own body length , dogs have a intestinal tract that is 6-35 times their own body length and humans have a intestinal tract that is 6-35 times their own body length , what this means is that dogs have the exact same intestinal tract as other omnivores like humans for example.
digestive capability
dogs have the abillty to digest and obtain nutrients from many things , they can obtain nutrients from protiens , fibers , carbohydrates and many other things you can obtain nutrients from , dogs can as well

here is a vet website going through everything dogs can get nutrients from , from manily meats to fruits as well something a true carnivore cannot get nutrients from , true carnivores like cats and wolves can only obtain nutrients from meat and not plants , while dogs can obtain nutrients from both meats and plants.
one more thing [dogs have big teeth like wolves and other carnivores]
im just gonna prove something teeth do not always tell if you are a carnivore or omnivore , it does mostly but not always, infact i will show you some omnivores with very sharp teeth and no flat teeth
fox teeth [omnivore]
coyote teeth [omnivore]
grey wolf teeth [carnivore]
dog teeth
human teeth [omnivore]
what i am here to prove is that although as a whole omnivores do posses sharp teeth and flat teeth like humans do , this is not always the case as foxes and coyotes are both omnivores and all have no flat teeth , only sharp teeth , plus not to mention their are carnivores with flat teeth like this whale
whale teeth [carnivore]
so in total i would like to say that domestic dogs are not carnivores but indeed omnivores , however dogs are not obligante omnivores like humans are , this means they can live on a totally carnivore diet , but they are still omnivores due to their abillty to obtain nutrients from meats and plants .
i hope you enjoyed reading this post , peaceout
